“Africa After War: Paths to Forgiveness”

On November 14, 2006, the Library hosted a public talk examining The Christian Science Monitor’s distinctive solution-oriented approach to journalism. Monitor photojournalist Melanie Stetson Freeman and former Africa correspondent Abraham McLaughlin displayed photographs and discussed their recent four-part Monitor series. A full streaming video presentation of this program is available here.

Recently returned from Burundi, Uganda, Liberia, and Rwanda, Stetson and McLaughlin discussed how these nations are attempting to heal and move beyond past atrocities. See the links below for streaming video and downloads of their remarkable stories, including: how Jeannette, a Rwandan farmer, has come to hire her family’s killers; and how love and marriage can survive between a Hutu and Tutsi in Burundi.

Additionally, Marshall Ingwerson, the Monitor’s managing editor, and Sherry Darling, Library researcher, introduced the talk by discussing the history of the Monitor’s mission in connection with the Library’s exhibit, “Sensational Press. Radical Response.”
