On December 6, 2005, the Library hosted a panel discussion featuring three prominent photographers who displayed their work and discussed their own approaches to photographing daily life.
The discussion continued the conversation prompted by the Library’s photography exhibit, “Fractions of Time Well Spent” (January 2006 - January 2007), which chronicled the birth of the snapshot and its emergence in the Mary Baker Eddy household (for exhibit images, see the Photo Gallery below).
Melanie Stetson Freeman has photographed stories in 60 countries and throughout the U.S. since joining The Christian Science Monitor staff in 1985. As the Monitor’s assistant director of photography, she coordinates photographic news reporting and project work with the Monitor’s domestic and overseas bureau staffs.
Abelardo Morell, recently featured in the New York Times Magazine, is a successful fine-art photographer whose stunning work with camera obscura continues to receive high praise from the national art scene.
Lee Kilpatrick, director of the Washington Street Art Center, is a panoramic photographer specializing in candid indoor shots. His work has been exhibited extensively in the metropolitan Boston area.
See below for a photo gallery of the speakers’ work and an audio recording of the discussion.
