On Tuesday mornings in July and August, The Mary Baker Eddy Library hosted the One World program, which is a series of free, creative and interactive events for children aged 4-10.
The program offered numerous activities ranging from designing journals to decorating picture frames. Children were even invited to try musical instruments such as drums and percussion. Entertainment included live musical performances and puppet shows on six consecutive Tuesdays throughout the summer. Featured performances highlighted stories and songs from around the globe, effectively educating children about a variety of cultures. Each Tuesday program included a free tour of the Mapparium®, a 30-foot high painted glass globe designed by Chester Lindsay Churchill.
At the end of each event, all children were encouraged to take books of their choosing thanks, in part, to donations made possible by Hachette USA, Houghton Mifflin, Penguin Group USA, and Rand McNally. Participants who attended all six events began this school year with a half-dozen age-appropriate books. Since many of the attendees come from low-income families, the book giveaway was an added benefit.
“By inviting local children to participate in the Library’s many features, we hope we have given them the opportunity to understand that education and culture are accessible and fun at all ages,” said Mary Trammell Chairman of the Library Board of Trustees.
The Library is seeking bright, enthusiastic, and dedicated volunteers to join our docent program.
