In her time, Glover’s mother, Mary Baker Eddy, was a major celebrity and controversial figure. Her story is as topical today as it was then, raising the issues of ageism, sexism and media integrity as well as of freedom of speech and belief. The play—“Mrs Eddy”—tells the story of Sibyl Wilbur, a successful journalist who gives up her prestigious job to defend Eddy.
On Thursday, January 21, at 7 p.m. writer/director Christine Buxton described her vision and passion for bringing an extraordinary episode in the life of this fascinating woman to the stage. According to Buxton, the play is “thought-provoking, relevant to today and inspiring.” The case is brought to trial and the trial will take place not only in a court of law, but also in the court of public opinion.
In addition to conducting research at The Mary Baker Eddy Library, Buxton has studied and analyzed papers at the Boston Public Library and other libraries, courthouses, and historical societies from New England to California to uncover the details and drama of this story. In this program, she explored the creative process with the audience, discussing how to bring Eddy’s story to the stage.
Buxton's "Writer/Director Talk" was a part of the Mary Baker Eddy Centenary Series, "Strength of Spirit—Engaging with Mary Baker Eddy 100 Years Later". Admission was $8, or $5 for Friends of the Library.
The Library is seeking bright, enthusiastic, and dedicated volunteers to join our docent program.
