Last summer, The Mary Baker Eddy Library was pleased to announce the return of “One World,” the free children’s enrichment program for children ages 4–10.
“One World” is a summer program that introduces culture and arts to the children of Boston. In 2009, the Library will focused on its current exhibit: “All in Harmony,” which detailed the role music played in Mary Baker Eddy’s life.
Activities included arts and crafts, book giveaways, live multicultural performances, a poetry wall, and free admission to the world–famous Mapparium®, the spectacular three–story, painted–glass globe.
Craft activities were designed to connect children to the Library’s historical collection, from making journal books to photo frame decoration. Each week featured a different performance and craft activity.
“One World 2009” was held 10 a.m. to noon on the following Tuesdays: July 7 with Kalfou (percussion members of Zili Misik); July 14 with Amal Shumar (hip-hop dance); July 21 with Janice Allen (song teller); July 28 with Victor Cockburn (songwriter and teaching artist); August 4 with Kalfou; and August 11 with Amal Shumar.
“The ‘One World’ program extends the reach of the Library and its namesake and hopefully inspires children to get excited about museums and libraries. We help make history and its ideas vibrant and alive, while teaching kids about different cultures and ways of life,” said Lesley Pitts, executive manager and president of the library.
“One World” was open to all families and youth groups, but space was limited. Program capacity is 150 participants per week and reservations were required by phone or e-mail.
The Library is seeking bright, enthusiastic, and dedicated volunteers to join our docent program.
