Es gehen gelegentlich Fragen \u00fcber Dr. Max Kappeler (1910\u20132002) bei uns ein, insbesondere hinsichtlich seiner Lehren und seiner Verbindung zur Christlichen Wissenschaft. Hier sind einige Hintergrundinformationen.<\/p>\n

Kappeler wurde 1935 Mitglied der Ersten Kirche Christi, Wissenschaftler (der Mutterkirche). Sein Antrag wurde von John W. Doorly gegengezeichnet, einem Praktiker und Lehrer der Christlichen Wissenschaft und damaligem Mitglied des Vortragsrats der Christlichen Wissenschaft. Kappelers Verbindung zu Doorly ist wichtig f\u00fcr ein Verst\u00e4ndnis seiner Laufbahn.<\/p>\n

Auf seinem Antrag um Mitgliedschaft gab Kappeler als vorherige Religionszugeh\u00f6rigkeit \u201eSchweizer Protestant\u201c an. Als Wohnort gab er Z\u00fcrich an, wo er sein restliches Leben verbrachte.<\/p>\n

Kappeler erhielt Elementarunterricht in der Christlichen Wissenschaft bei Doorly in England, bevor dieser 1946 aus der Mutterkirche austrat. Kappeler war ein starker Vertreter der Ansichten seines Lehrers; dies ging so weit, dass ihre Ansichten manchmal als Lehren von \u201eDoorly-Kappeler\u201c bezeichnet werden. Kappelers Mitgliedschaft in der Mutterkirche endete 1952, doch fuhr er fort, zu schreiben, lehren und Vortr\u00e4ge zu halten bis zu seinem Tod. Er gab mehrere B\u00fccher, Tonb\u00e4nder und Studienanleitungen zum \u201eDoorly-System\u201c heraus, hielt Ansprachen und Unterrichtsklassen, die sich an Christliche Wissenschaftler:innen und nicht die \u00d6ffentlichkeit richteten.<\/p>\n

Robert Peel war ein bekannter Historiker und Biograf von Mary Baker Eddy, der Entdeckerin der Christlichen Wissenschaft und Verfasserin von Wissenschaft und Gesundheit mit Schl\u00fcssel zur Heiligen Schrift. <\/em>Er gab in dem 1977 erschienenen dritten Band seiner Trilogie \u00fcber Mrs. Eddy folgende Einsch\u00e4tzung der Auslegung ihrer Lehren: \u201eZu [Mrs. Eddys] Lebzeiten und danach haben Christliche Wissenschaftler mit einer Neigung zur Spekulation die Tendenz gezeigt, ihre Lehren in eine erfinderische neuzeitliche Scholastik auszuweiten, die zunehmend abstrakt wurde, als sie immer mehr in reine, aber nicht demonstrierte Theorie ausartete.\u201c<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Doorly und Kappelers \u201eNeigung zur Spekulation\u201c wurde f\u00fcr Peel in einem Schema deutlich, das er in einer Fu\u00dfnote beschreibt:<\/p>\n

Wenn man Mrs. Eddys sieben Synonyme f\u00fcr Gott<\/span> horizontal in einer nach dem Zufallsprinzip gewonnenen, festen Ordnung anordnete und ihre vier metaphorischen \u201eSeiten\u201c der \u201eStadt mit vier Seiten\u201c in der Offenbarung des Johannes (d. h. das Wort Gottes<\/span>, der Christus, das Christentum, die g\u00f6ttliche Wissenschaft) vertikal darunter auff\u00fchrte, ergab sich daraus eine rechteckige \u201eMatrix\u201c kleiner Vierecke oder Felder, die die Stufen der Entwicklung repr\u00e4sentierten, \u00fcber die man theoretisch von der Christlichen Wissenschaft zur Absoluten Christlichen Wissenschaft zur G\u00f6ttlichen Wissenschaft bis zur reinen und abstrakten Wissenschaft gelangte. Alles, von den sieben Tagen der Sch\u00f6pfung und den vier Evangelien bis hin zur Anordnung der Kapitel in Wissenschaft und Gesundheit<\/em> \u2013 ja, die gesamte menschliche Geschichte \u2013, wurde dann in diese Matrix gezw\u00e4ngt.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Kappeler behauptete, dass Mrs. Eddy sich der vollst\u00e4ndigen Bedeutung ihrer Entdeckung nicht bewusst gewesen sei und dass Doorly die vollst\u00e4ndige Erkl\u00e4rung gegeben habe. Peel wies ferner auf ihre Tendenz hin, \u201edas christliche oder religi\u00f6se Wesen der Christlichen Wissenschaft als etwas zu betrachten, das man f\u00fcr eine \u201awissenschaftliche\u2018 oder \u201aabsolute\u2018 Herangehensweise\u201c aufgeben m\u00fcsse, sowie auf \u201eihre Ablehnung der von Mrs. Eddy gegr\u00fcndeten Kirche\u201c.<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Kappelers Arbeit erhielt nach dem 2. Weltkrieg erstmals Aufmerksamkeit. Dies lag u. a. an dem Anstieg von S\u00e4kularit\u00e4t und Wissenschaftsgl\u00e4ubigkeit, der Verw\u00fcstung und Vertreibung in der Welt und dem Beginn des Kalten Krieges. Und unter Christlichen Wissenschaftler:innen mangelte es sowohl den kritischen wie positiven Darstellungen Mrs. Eddys an dem Gleichgewicht und der Tiefe, die erst nach und nach aufgrund der Bereitstellung historischer Materialien m\u00f6glich wurden und dadurch, dass die Bewegung der Christlichen Wissenschaft ein klareres Verst\u00e4ndnis ihrer Gr\u00fcnderin erlangte.<\/p>\n

Im Laufe der Jahre kamen Fragen \u00fcber die von Kappeler verbreiteten Ideen auf. Ein 1975erschienener Leitartikel im Christian Science Journal <\/em>(auf Englisch) mit dem Titel \u201eScience and Health: <\/em>Its Pure and Complete Teaching\u201c (\u201eWissenschaft und Gesundheit:<\/em> seine unverf\u00e4lschte und vollst\u00e4ndige Lehre\u201c<\/a>, Herold der Christlichen Wissenschaft,<\/em> September 1975) begann mit einer Frage:<\/p>\n

Was hat [Mary Baker] Eddy selbst, als Entdeckerin und Gr\u00fcnderin der Christlichen Wissenschaft, zu diesem Thema zu sagen?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Der Artikel gibt dann ausf\u00fchrlich Auskunft.<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Ohne Kappeler oder andere Gruppen direkt zu nennen, widerlegte der Artikel die von ihnen vorgebrachten Behauptungen. Der Vorstand der Christlichen Wissenschaft, in dessen Namen der Artikel ver\u00f6ffentlicht wurde, nahm Mary Baker Eddys eigenen Worte zu Hilfe, darunter folgende:<\/p>\n

\u201eWissenschaft und Gesundheit mit Schl\u00fcssel zur Heiligen Schrift\u201c ist ein vollst\u00e4ndiges Lehrbuch der Christlichen Wissenschaft, und ihre metaphysische Heilweise ist darin so klar dargestellt, wie es bei der Notwendigkeit, \u00dcbersinnliches in sinnlichen Sprachbegriffen auszudr\u00fccken, m\u00f6glich ist. Au\u00dferhalb der Lehren dieses Buches besteht durchaus kein zus\u00e4tzliches Geheimnis, das die Macht zu heilen verleihen k\u00f6nnte, aber es ist unerl\u00e4sslich, dass der Sch\u00fcler, um heilen zu k\u00f6nnen, den Inhalt dieses Buches geistig verstehen lernt.<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
