Early on, communion services were major events at The Mother Church, including reading the names of new members and having them stand up. We\u2019ll discuss why church founder Mary Baker Eddy decided to abolish Communion services in The Mother Church in 1908\u2014while still preserving them in its branch churches with a special order of services. Joining us to discuss this history are Mike Hamilton, The Mary Baker Eddy Library\u2019s executive manager, and Tom Kliewer, a member of the Library\u2019s research team. Join us for a look at its influence in the work of twentieth-century abstract artists Vicci Sperry and Hilma af Klint. This episode gives special attention to Sperry, who was Dr. Braude\u2019s grandmother, as well as a Christian Scientist for whom spirituality and art were completely interconnected. Her primary interest is the religious history of American women, and she has published many articles on women in Judaism, Christian Science, and American religious life, as well as authored several books on religion and women in America. Dr. Braude\u2019s current research focuses on spiritual influences in abstract painting. She recently taught a course titled \u201cSpiritual Paths to Abstract Art\u201d at Harvard Divinity School, examining various twentieth-century artists through the lens of religious studies.\r\n\r\nDr. Braude has a long-standing history with The Mary Baker Eddy Library.
