And what does this role tell us about the church\u2019s history? In this episode, we speak to Martha Moffett, the current Clerk. She explains the unique relationship of this office to the worldwide membership of the Christian Science church, and tells how that informs her responsibilities in overseeing use of the church buildings at the Boston, Massachusetts headquarters. We\u2019ll also hear from Judy Huenneke, Senior Research Archivist at The Mary Baker Eddy Library. Moffet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is Clerk of The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, serving its worldwide membership in this role since 2023. She spent her early career as a federal prosecutor for the United States Department of Justice and as a special Assistant United States Attorney. After her husband was transferred to the Middle East to report for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Christian Science Monito<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r, she worked for a human rights nonprofit in the region. This expanded her awareness of the world\u2019s yearning for justice and for a greater understanding of God\u2019s love. It prompted her to begin a more systematic study of the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy\u2019s writings. This study led her to devote her full time to the healing practice of Christian Science and, later, to become a teacher of Christian Science healing. She is glad to serve the Church as Clerk, and she continues her work as a Christian Science practitioner and teacher of Christian Science.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marybakereddylibrary.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/CROP-Judy-Huenneke-120x120-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73757 size-full alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marybakereddylibrary.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/CROP-Judy-Huenneke-120x120-1.jpg\" alt=\"Headshot of Judy Huenneke, with short grey hair and wearing a grey cowlneck sweater.\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a>Judy Huenneke<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the Library\u2019s Senior Research Archivist. This episode gives special attention to Sperry, who was Dr. Braude\u2019s grandmother, as well as a Christian Scientist for whom spirituality and art were completely interconnected. Her primary interest is the religious history of American women, and she has published many articles on women in Judaism, Christian Science, and American religious life, as well as authored several books on religion and women in America. Dr. Braude\u2019s current research focuses on spiritual influences in abstract painting. She recently taught a course titled \u201cSpiritual Paths to Abstract Art\u201d at Harvard Divinity School, examining various twentieth-century artists through the lens of religious studies.\r\n\r\nDr. Braude has a long-standing history with The Mary Baker Eddy Library.
