Caroline D. Noyes (1846-1922) naci\u00f3 y falleci\u00f3 en Gardiner, Maine. Se interes\u00f3 en la Ciencia Cristiana en 1882, despu\u00e9s de asistir a conferencias de sal\u00f3n en la casa de Mary Baker Eddy en 569 Columbus Avenue. M\u00e1s tarde estudi\u00f3 con Eddy, completando la Clase Primaria (1884), la Clase Normal (1885) y el Curso de Obstetricia (1887). Se afili\u00f3 a la Asociaci\u00f3n de Cient\u00edficos Cristianos en marzo de 1884 y a La Primera Iglesia de Cristo, Cient\u00edfico, el 31 de diciembre de 1892, de la que fue miembro hasta su fallecimiento. Fue una de las pioneras de la Ciencia Cristiana en el Medio Oeste. En 1886, gestion\u00f3 y obtuvo la escritura de constituci\u00f3n del primer Instituto de la Ciencia Cristiana en Illinois y fue tambi\u00e9n miembro fundadora de la Iglesia de Cristo (Cient\u00edfico) de Chicago (m\u00e1s tarde conocida como Primera Iglesia de Cristo, Cient\u00edfico, de Chicago). A fines de la d\u00e9cada de 1890, regres\u00f3 a Gardiner, donde continu\u00f3 trabajando como practicista y maestra de la Ciencia Cristiana hasta 1914, anunci\u00e1ndose como tal en el Directorio de The Christian Science Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Katie Swarts (c.1839-c.1911) naci\u00f3 en Michigan y muy probablemente falleci\u00f3 en Illinois. En mayo de 1884, ella y su esposo, A. J. Swarts, asistieron a los \u00faltimos cinco d\u00edas de una Clase Primaria impartida en Chicago por Mary Baker Eddy. Su sistema copiaba la terminolog\u00eda de la Ciencia Cristiana, pero rechazaba a la vez los m\u00e9todos de Eddy. Bradford Sherman (1827-1917) naci\u00f3 en Eastham, Massachusetts, y falleci\u00f3 en Chicago, Illinois. Mary Baker Eddy se refiri\u00f3 a la malapr\u00e1ctica mental como \u201cla acci\u00f3n perjudicial de una mente mortal controlando otra por motivos err\u00f3neos, y es practicada con fines equivocados o malignos\u201d (Ciencia y Salud <\/em>451:28). Ella vio que la base de dicha malapr\u00e1ctica era el \u201cmagnetismo animal\u201d, tambi\u00e9n conocido como \u201cmesmerismo\u201d. El mesmerismo fue dado a conocer por primera vez en el siglo XVIII por Franz Anton Mesmer, quien descubri\u00f3 que determinados individuos pod\u00edan ser llevados a un estado llamado \u201csue\u00f1o magn\u00e9tico\u201d, en el cual eran susceptibles de ser influenciados o controlados por sugestiones mentales, inducidas oral o telep\u00e1ticamente por el \u201cmesmerista\u201d. E. S. Coursen (m\u00e1s tarde Emily S. Dainty; 1847-1921) naci\u00f3 en Mackinac Island, Michigan, y falleci\u00f3 en Chicago, Illinois.
