En cartas escritas durante el Levantamiento de los B\u00f3xers de 1900, Sarah Pike Conger frecuentemente mencionaba su religi\u00f3n y contaba c\u00f3mo la ayudaba a sobrellevar esos dif\u00edciles meses. Esposa del Ministro estadounidense en Beijing, China, durante el sitio del \u00e1rea de residencia extranjera de la ciudad, Sarah fue una fuente de consuelo para otras personas.<\/p>\n

Naci\u00f3 con el nombre de Sarah Jane Pike en Ohio, el 24 de julio de 1843. Sus padres la alentaron a estudiar, lo que gener\u00f3 en ella un deseo de aprender que continu\u00f3 durante toda su vida. Sarah asisti\u00f3 al Lombard College de Galesberg, Illinois. All\u00ed conoci\u00f3 al que ser\u00eda su futuro esposo, Edwin Conger. Su relaci\u00f3n se estableci\u00f3 sobre una base de igualdad absoluta, que Edwin describi\u00f3 as\u00ed en una carta a la hija de ambos: \u201cPara tener confianza mutua, impl\u00edcita e infalible, es necesario siempre considerar al otro m\u00e1s que a uno mismo\u201d.<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tras desarrollar una carrera pol\u00edtica en su pa\u00eds, Edwin Conger fue designado Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores para Brasil en septiembre de 1890. Los Conger se mudaron a Petr\u00f3polis, donde Sarah tuvo su primera experiencia de vida fuera de los Estados Unidos.<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/span> Su deseo de comprender a la gente que la rodeaba la oblig\u00f3 a reevaluar su \u201cactitud de superioridad\u201d.<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> En una carta que envi\u00f3 a Mary Baker Eddy en 1898, Sarah escribi\u00f3: \u201cHe dejado de comparar y contrastar a esta gente con mis queridos compatriotas… Hay<\/span> una<\/span> sola<\/span> hermandad<\/span>\u201d.<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Sarah se hab\u00eda afiliado a La Iglesia Madre en enero de 1894 y m\u00e1s adelante se recibi\u00f3 de maestra de la Ciencia Cristiana. Si bien sus cartas a Eddy no revelan detalles espec\u00edficos de c\u00f3mo se interes\u00f3 en la Ciencia Cristiana, frecuentemente expresaba gratitud por esta Ciencia. Las dos mujeres siguieron intercambiando correspondencia durante el resto de la vida de Eddy.<\/p>\n

En enero de 1898, Edwin fue designado ministro para China, y ese verano los Conger llegaron al \u00c1rea de Residencia de la Legaci\u00f3n de Beijing (en ese entonces llamada Pek\u00edn). Sarah, defensora de los derechos de las mujeres, ten\u00eda particular inter\u00e9s en las experiencias de las mujeres chinas.<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Pero al llegar a China se dio cuenta de que rara vez interactuaba con mujeres.<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Su deseo se cumpli\u00f3 parcialmente el 18 de diciembre de 1898, cuando las esposas de los ministros de relaciones exteriores fueron invitadas a una audiencia con la Emperatriz Viuda Cixi.<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Sarah recordar\u00eda m\u00e1s tarde esta reuni\u00f3n en una carta que envi\u00f3 a su hermana:<\/p>\n

Ella estaba gozosa y feliz, y su cara irradiaba benevolencia. No hab\u00eda rasgo de crueldad alguno. Con expresiones simples nos dio la bienvenida, y sus gestos expresaban plena libertad y calidez. Su Majestad se puso de pie y nos dese\u00f3 lo mejor. Extendi\u00f3 ambas manos hacia cada dama y luego, volvi\u00e9ndolas hacia s\u00ed misma, dijo con fervor entusiasta: \u201cUna familia, todos somos una familia\u201d.<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Sarah lleg\u00f3 a China en una \u00e9poca tumultuousa. En 1898, un grupo conocido como los B\u00f3xers estaba ganando popularidad y poder en China noroccidental. Eran anticristianos y se opon\u00edan en\u00e9rgicamente a la influencia extranjera. En la primavera de 1900, los cristianos chinos y los misioneros extranjeros llegaban en gran n\u00famero a Beijing, buscando protecci\u00f3n en el \u00c1rea de Residencia de la Legaci\u00f3n.<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span> A mediados de junio las calles de Beijing estaban llenas de B\u00f3xers.<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Los edificios que circundaban al \u00c1rea de Residencia de la Legaci\u00f3n fueron destruidos y las legaciones quedaron atrapadas. Los ministros telegrafiaron a sus gobiernos pidiendo apoyo y se desplegaron tropas \u2014pero transcurrir\u00edan varias semanas antes de que llegaran a Beijing.<\/p>\n

El 18 de junio de 1900, el Gobierno de China inform\u00f3 a los ministros que ten\u00edan 24 horas para salir de la ciudad. Una vez transcurrido ese tiempo el Gobierno les retirar\u00eda su protecci\u00f3n.<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Edwin y los dem\u00e1s ministros concluyeron que lo m\u00e1s seguro ser\u00eda quedarse en Beijing y esperar a sus soldados.<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Sarah inform\u00f3 que el personal, los refugiados y los misioneros trabajaban juntos para combatir los incendios iniciados por los B\u00f3xers.<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Ella los ayud\u00f3 a construir sacos de arenas para las barricadas, a hacer vendas con jirones de ropa y a recoger suministros.<\/span>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Una mujer rememor\u00f3 que a Sarah se la conoc\u00eda como el \u201chada madrina\u201d.<\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Para Sarah, sobrevivir a esa penosa experiencia era un asunto de fe:<\/p>\n

Doy gracias cada hora. Hay mucho que agradecer. Mi Ciencia Cristiana es todo para m\u00ed, y sin embargo, desear\u00eda poder hacer mucho m\u00e1s con ella. Parece haber mucho por hacer para disipar la oscuridad y dejar que entre la luz. Mi coraz\u00f3n se vuelve a menudo a los queridos compa\u00f1eros Cient\u00edficos Cristianos de mi patria. Estoy segura de que nos est\u00e1n enviando pensamientos de salud fuertes y protectores.<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

El 14 de agosto de 1900, llegaron a Beijing tropas internacionales que relevaron a las legaciones, aunque continu\u00f3 cierta resistencia en algunas partes de China, hasta que en septiembre de 1901, se firm\u00f3 el Protocolo B\u00f3xer.<\/span>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Los Conger se quedaron en China. El 1o<\/sup> de febrero de 1902, Sarah se reuni\u00f3 otra vez con la Emperatriz Viuda, esta vez liderando a las mujeres del cuerpo diplom\u00e1tico. Sarah era la \u00fanica mujer en la recepci\u00f3n que hab\u00eda estado presente durante todo el sitio. En su discurso expres\u00f3 su esperanza de \u201drelaciones m\u00e1s francas, m\u00e1s confiables y m\u00e1s amistosas con los pueblos extranjeros\u201d.<\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

En 1905, los Conger regresaron a los Estados Unidos y se instalaron en Pasadena, California.<\/span>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Edwin falleci\u00f3 el 18 de mayo de 1907, tras haber sido afectada su precaria salud por el estr\u00e9s del sitio de Beijing .<\/span>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Sarah falleci\u00f3 en febrero de 1932 en el Hogar de la Ciencia Cristiana Pleasant View de Concord, New Hampshire.<\/span>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Durante sus a\u00f1os en el exterior, busc\u00f3 promover un mayor entendimiento entre los pueblos. En su correspondencia con Mary Baker Eddy tras su regreso a los Estados Unidos, cont\u00f3 c\u00f3mo su religi\u00f3n influenci\u00f3 el trabajo de su vida:<\/p>\n

Mi misi\u00f3n en China fue de relaciones amistosas; me esforc\u00e9 por establecer y mantener esta clase de relaciones con el pueblo chino, los diplom\u00e1ticos, los misioneros, y con todos con quienes entr\u00e9 en contacto. A l'\u00e9poque de Mary Baker Eddy, un \u00ab\u00a0environnementaliste\u00a0\u00bb \u00e9tait une personne qui croyait que l'influence exerc\u00e9e par l'environnement \u00e9tait plus grande que celle due \u00e0 l'h\u00e9r\u00e9dit\u00e9 \u2013 en d'autres termes, il croyait \u00e0 la pr\u00e9pond\u00e9rance de l'acquis sur l'inn\u00e9. Ce n'est qu'en 1916 que ce terme a \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 pour la premi\u00e8re fois pour d\u00e9signer celui qui se soucie de la nature. Au dix-neuvi\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, un \u00ab\u00a0naturaliste\u00a0\u00bb se serait senti plus proche de ce que nous entendons aujourd'hui par un \u00ab\u00a0environnementaliste\u00a0\u00bb, m\u00eame si ce mot avait souvent un sens mat\u00e9rialiste, car les naturalistes recherchaient des explications dans la nature et non dans le monde spirituel.<\/p>

Si Mary Baker Eddy ne correspondait pas \u00e0 l'image d'un environnementaliste de son \u00e9poque, elle se souciait n\u00e9anmoins de l'environnement. Elle aimait les animaux et la nature, et pensait que la beaut\u00e9 du monde naturel refl\u00e9tait la beaut\u00e9 et la majest\u00e9 de Dieu.<\/p>

Mary Baker Eddy a pass\u00e9 les quinze premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es de sa vie dans une ferme, \u00e0 Bow, dans le New Hampshire. Son p\u00e8re, Mark Baker, cultivait pr\u00e8s de deux cents hectares sur les terres familiales. Plus tard, elle se souviendra avec nostalgie \u00ab\u00a0de larges champs de bl\u00e9 ployant, ondulant gracieusement dans la clart\u00e9 du soleil... des vergers de pommiers, de p\u00eachers, de poiriers et de cerisiers... de verts p\u00e2turages, \u00e9gay\u00e9s de baies, de ruisseaux chantants, de belles fleurs des champs, et... de grands troupeaux...\u00a0\u00bb[note]Mary Baker Eddy, R\u00e9trospection et Introspection<\/em> (Boston : La Premi\u00e8re Eglise du Christ, Scientiste, 1901), p. 4.[\/note]<\/p>

Elle aimait tout particuli\u00e8rement les animaux de la ferme.<\/p>

La maison de Mary Baker Eddy, \u00e0 Concord, dans le New Hampshire, \u00e9tait une ferme en pleine activit\u00e9. En plus des cochons et des vaches, il y avait un grand potager et un verger de pommiers. Les employ\u00e9s de la maison et les travailleurs journaliers de la r\u00e9gion ramassaient et stockaient les l\u00e9gumes utilis\u00e9s en cuisine. Lorsqu'on avait cueilli suffisamment de pommes pour satisfaire aux besoins de la maison, le voisinage \u00e9tait invit\u00e9 \u00e0 cueillir l'exc\u00e9dent. Les registres tenus avec soin par Calvin Frye nous apprennent qu'on cultivait, selon les saisons, des pois, des betteraves, des pommes de terre, des oignons, des asperges, des fraises, des pommes, des p\u00eaches, de l'avoine, du seigle et des plantes fourrag\u00e8res. Dans l'un des champs, surnomm\u00e9 le \u00ab\u00a0champ de Jones\u00a0\u00bb, on planta du seigle en 1901, et on le moissonna avec les chevaux de trait Nelly et Jerry. Le champ fut consacr\u00e9 au p\u00e2turage l'ann\u00e9e suivante, mais cette unique moisson permit \u00e0 la maisonn\u00e9e d'avoir assez de seigle jusqu'en 1908, date \u00e0 laquelle Mary Baker Eddy quitta Pleasant View.[note]Souvenirs de John Salchow, p. 17.[\/note] Elle ne consid\u00e9rait pas v\u00e9ritablement sa maison comme une ferme, mais plut\u00f4t comme un refuge, un lieu de r\u00e9sidence priv\u00e9, entour\u00e9 de terres nourrici\u00e8res.<\/p>

Pleasant View \u00e9tait r\u00e9put\u00e9 non seulement pour ses cultures vivri\u00e8res, mais \u00e9galement pour ses fleurs. La propri\u00e9t\u00e9 poss\u00e9dait une serre entretenue par un fleuriste de Concord, et chaque printemps, John Salchow et August Mann am\u00e9nageaient de vastes parterres de fleurs de diverses vari\u00e9t\u00e9s en diff\u00e9rents endroits, notamment entre la maison et la grange. Dans ses souvenirs, Salchow \u00e9crit que Mary Baker Eddy aimait particuli\u00e8rement les roses, et qu'il avait pris grand soin de cr\u00e9er une \u00ab\u00a0magnifique roseraie\u00a0\u00bb. Il \u00e9tait \u00e9galement fier de ses parterres de tulipes\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0La moiti\u00e9 des habitants de Concord venaient \u00e0 Pleasant View pour les voir. L'amour de Mary Baker Eddy pour la nature est manifeste dans ses \u00e9crits. Elle recourt souvent \u00e0 des m\u00e9taphores de la nature pour expliquer ses id\u00e9es. Ainsi \u00e9crit-elle dans Science et Sant\u00e9\u00a0:<\/em><\/p>

\u00ab\u00a0L'instinct vaut mieux que la raison mal dirig\u00e9e, comme le proclame la nature elle-m\u00eame. Les violettes ouvrent leurs yeux bleus pour saluer les premiers jours du printemps. Les feuilles, ces adoratrices inlassables de la nature, battent des mains. La niverolle chante et plane au sein des rafales hivernales\u00a0; ses pattes mouill\u00e9es ne lui donnent pas de bronchite, et elle se procure une r\u00e9sidence d'\u00e9t\u00e9 avec plus de facilit\u00e9 qu'un nabab. L'atmosph\u00e8re de la terre, plus cl\u00e9mente que l'atmosph\u00e8re de l'entendement mortel, laisse la bronchite \u00e0 ce dernier.
