Her family ties and musical life took her from Europe to the far reaches of the United States, first as a composer and then as a practitioner of Christian Science healing. The first song, \u201cA Bulgarian Pin,\u201d is a playful selection from her comic opera <em>Mr. Sampson of Omaha<\/em> (1888)\u2014one of the earliest operas produced in the United States that was written by a woman. By contrast, the second selection\u2014\u201cNow is come Salvation and Strength\u201d\u2014is a sacred song with a reverent demeanor, composed for the 1897 dedication services of Chicago\u2019s First Church of Christ, Scientist. Dr. Braude\u2019s current research focuses on spiritual influences in abstract painting. She recently taught a course titled \u201cSpiritual Paths to Abstract Art\u201d at Harvard Divinity School, examining various twentieth-century artists through the lens of religious studies.\r\n\r\nDr. Braude has a long-standing history with The Mary Baker Eddy Library.
