Our guests were Library colleagues Dr. Sherry Darling and Bronwen Arthur, who brought us inside their work with the Mary Baker Eddy Papers\u2014the Library\u2019s ongoing project to digitize, transcribe, and make accessible its collection of Mary Baker Eddy\u2019s correspondence and manuscripts. In particular, our guests gave a glimpse into what the Library\u2019s collections reveal about all the activity that was going on in Eddy\u2019s church in the year 1886. You\u2019ll learn about the publication of a landmark edition of her book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as well as how <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Christian Science Journal, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a magazine <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">founded in 1883, had become an important channel of communication between Eddy and her followers. She has been researching and writing about Eddy and th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e history of Christian Science for the Library since she joined the staff in 2002. Prior to editing Eddy\u2019s papers, she worked at the Library as a researcher, writing historical articles and managing a variety of projects that included the fellowship program, newsletters, exhibits, and software migrations. She earned her Ph.D. in theatre history and literature from Tufts University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54511 size-full alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marybakereddylibrary.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/headshot_Bronwen_Arthur.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Bronwen Arthur<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> joined the Mary Baker Eddy Papers team in 2016. Before that she worked as a researcher at the Library and held several positions with The Christian Science Publishing Society. As Assistant Editor, she does \u201ca little bit of everything\u201d to ensure that the work of transcribing, annotating, and publishing the Papers runs smoothly. She particularly enjoys sharing new findings through research articles, email updates, social media posts, and podcasts. This episode gives special attention to Sperry, who was Dr. Braude\u2019s grandmother, as well as a Christian Scientist for whom spirituality and art were completely interconnected. Her primary interest is the religious history of American women, and she has published many articles on women in Judaism, Christian Science, and American religious life, as well as authored several books on religion and women in America. Dr. Braude\u2019s current research focuses on spiritual influences in abstract painting. She recently taught a course titled \u201cSpiritual Paths to Abstract Art\u201d at Harvard Divinity School, examining various twentieth-century artists through the lens of religious studies.\r\n\r\nDr. Braude has a long-standing history with The Mary Baker Eddy Library.
