It was designed in the early 1930s by renowned architect Chester Lindsay Churchill, to house the operations of The Christian Science Publishing Society. Created with both utility and beauty in mind, this \u201cliving historical artifact\u201d was intended to artfully communicate the values of that organization. Today the Publishing House is also home to the departments of the Christian Science Church, including The Mary Baker Eddy Library. We\u2019ll learn how and why the Publishing House was designed and constructed\u2014during the height of the Great Depression. Focusing on restoration and repair, her projects have included overseeing the recent construction of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Do You See the World?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experience on the first floor of the Christian Science Publishing House. Her activities also include liaising with many agencies in the city of Boston, including the Landmark Commission, which regulates exterior work done across the 14-acre Christian Science Plaza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marybakereddylibrary.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/CROP-Ben-Foti.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-65225 size-full alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marybakereddylibrary.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/CROP-Ben-Foti.jpg\" alt=\"Headshot of Ben Foti\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a>Ben Foti<\/b> is a researcher at the Library. In his work he helps to answer the hundreds of public inquiries received annually on a variety of subjects about Mary Baker Eddy and the Christian Science movement. He also occasionally assists with special projects relating to the Library\u2019s collections. He earned a BA in mass communication from Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. Join us for a look at its influence in the work of twentieth-century abstract artists Vicci Sperry and Hilma af Klint. This episode gives special attention to Sperry, who was Dr. Braude\u2019s grandmother, as well as a Christian Scientist for whom spirituality and art were completely interconnected. Her religious faith conjoined with her study under the famed art teacher Hans Hofmann. She also purchased Jackson Pollock\u2019s last painting in a special effort to learn from it. She earned her bachelor's degree at Vassar College and holds advanced degrees from Yale University and the University of Chicago. Her primary interest is the religious history of American women, and she has published many articles on women in Judaism, Christian Science, and American religious life, as well as authored several books on religion and women in America. Dr. Braude\u2019s current research focuses on spiritual influences in abstract painting. She recently taught a course titled \u201cSpiritual Paths to Abstract Art\u201d at Harvard Divinity School, examining various twentieth-century artists through the lens of religious studies.\r\n\r\nDr. Braude has a long-standing history with The Mary Baker Eddy Library.
