This month we look at the connection between two nineteenth-century contemporaries. Frances Willard was president of the Woman&#8217;s Christian Temperance Union and leader of the temperance movement. Mary Baker Eddy was the founder of Christian Science, and is our Library\u2019s namesake. The two valued each other\u2019s causes. They corresponded and thought highly of each other. And in 1932\u2014decades after both of them had passed away\u2014a nationwide poll of American women named Eddy and Willard among the 12 women who had contributed most meaningfully to American progress in the previous 100 years. Christopher Evans, author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do Everything: The Biography of Frances Willard<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, joins us to explore the commonalities and differences between these two figures. Her primary interest is the religious history of American women, and she has published many articles on women in Judaism, Christian Science, and American religious life, as well as authored several books on religion and women in America. Dr. Braude\u2019s current research focuses on spiritual influences in abstract painting. She recently taught a course titled \u201cSpiritual Paths to Abstract Art\u201d at Harvard Divinity School, examining various twentieth-century artists through the lens of religious studies.\r\n\r\nDr. Braude has a long-standing history with The Mary Baker Eddy Library.
