It took place in April 2025, in front of a live audience in the Reading Room of The Mother Church (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston). In honor of National Poetry Month, our guests and moderator examined how poetry has played a valued part in the healing mission of Christian Science since the church\u2019s beginnings.<\/p>\n<p>From the potent and timeless psalms, to Mary Baker Eddy\u2019s lifelong love of verse-writing, to the poems of those practicing their faith, this discussion explored what makes Christian Science verse unique. Readings from both recent and older publications brought to life a broad range of poetry in the Christian Science tradition, bound by the common purpose of spiritual inspiration and healing. We also learn about poetry\u2019s contribution to the outreach of Christian Science Reading Rooms.<\/p>\n<p>Tessa Parmenter, poetry editor for <i>The Christian Science Journal<\/i>, <i>Sentinel<\/i>, and <i>Herald<\/i>, offers insights that draw from her extensive writing background and university study with a distinguished New England poet. Jasmine Holzworth, Manager\/Librarian for The Mother Church Reading Room, shares ways in which poetry has become part of the very fabric of the place she oversees. The Library\u2019s Laura Lapointe, in her role as guest host, draws on historical sources to amplify poetry\u2019s significance in Eddy\u2019s life and work. This episode gives special attention to Sperry, who was Dr. Braude\u2019s grandmother, as well as a Christian Scientist for whom spirituality and art were completely interconnected. Her religious faith conjoined with her study under the famed art teacher Hans Hofmann. She also purchased Jackson Pollock\u2019s last painting in a special effort to learn from it. Her primary interest is the religious history of American women, and she has published many articles on women in Judaism, Christian Science, and American religious life, as well as authored several books on religion and women in America. Dr. Braude\u2019s current research focuses on spiritual influences in abstract painting. She recently taught a course titled \u201cSpiritual Paths to Abstract Art\u201d at Harvard Divinity School, examining various twentieth-century artists through the lens of religious studies.\r\n\r\nDr. Braude has a long-standing history with The Mary Baker Eddy Library.
