Anim\u00e9e d\u2019un grand dynamisme, Caroline Violet Spiller Hay (1873-1969) a fait partie des premiers professeurs de Science Chr\u00e9tienne au Royaume-Uni. Elle a aussi \u00e9t\u00e9 la premi\u00e8re \u00e0 enseigner cette religion en Afrique du Sud. Comme le note un biographe, \u00ab\u00a0d\u00e8s qu\u2019elle a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00e9tudier la Science Chr\u00e9tienne, Violet Spiller s\u2019est consacr\u00e9e avec une grande \u00e9nergie \u00e0 la propagation du royaume de Dieu sur la terre en participant activement \u00e0 l\u2019organisation de l\u2019\u00e9glise.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>

Violet Hay \u00e9tait la fille du lieutenant-colonel Duncan Chisholm Oliver Spiller (1843-1923), officier de l\u2019Arm\u00e9e britannique, et de Matilda Lucy (Stirling) Spiller (1851-1931). C\u2019est un vendredi apr\u00e8s-midi de 1896 qu\u2019elle a assist\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019un des tout premiers services de la Science Chr\u00e9tienne en Grande-Bretagne, \u00e0 Londres.<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Elle a bient\u00f4t manifest\u00e9 le d\u00e9sir de travailler au sein du mouvement de la Science Chr\u00e9tienne, alors en pleine expansion, en y assumant un grand nombre de responsabilit\u00e9s, et en servant Premi\u00e8re Eglise du Christ, Scientiste, Londres, dans de nombreux postes. Violet Hay a eu la possibilit\u00e9 de se rendre plusieurs fois \u00e0 Boston, o\u00f9 Mary Baker Eddy avait fond\u00e9 peu de temps auparavant L\u2019Eglise M\u00e8re. A plusieurs occasions, elle a crois\u00e9 Mary Baker Eddy \u00e0 Concord, dans le New Hampshire, o\u00f9 celle-ci demeurait \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque. Les souvenirs de Violet Hay, datant de 1946 et intitul\u00e9s \u00ab Mes br\u00e8ves rencontres avec Mary Baker Eddy \u00bb, font partie des collections de la Biblioth\u00e8que. Violet Hay s\u2019est inscrite comme praticienne de la Science Chr\u00e9tienne \u00e0 partir de 1901. Elle est devenue professeure de Science Chr\u00e9tienne apr\u00e8s avoir suivi le Cours Normal du Conseil d\u2019Instruction en 1907.<\/p>\n

Ses activit\u00e9s ont pris une dimension internationale lorsqu\u2019elle est partie vivre en Afrique du Sud, en 1915. L\u00e0-bas, elle a \u00e9pous\u00e9 un commandant de marine, l\u2019honorable Sereld Hay (1877-1939), et elle a poursuivi sa pratique de la gu\u00e9rison et donn\u00e9 son cours au Cap. Elle a \u00e9galement servi en qualit\u00e9 de Comit\u00e9 de Publication pour la province du Cap. Dans ce r\u00f4le, qui implique des relations avec les m\u00e9dias au nom de L\u2019Eglise M\u00e8re, elle a r\u00e9pondu aux critiques acerbes \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard de Mary Baker Eddy et de la Science Chr\u00e9tienne, publi\u00e9es dans la presse sud-africaine. Ses r\u00e9ponses \u00e9taient \u00e0 la fois claires et pr\u00e9cises.<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Une lettre de correction \u00e9crite par Violet Hay en 1917 \u00e0 un journal du Cap constitue un bon exemple de l\u2019\u00e9nergie qu\u2019elle mettait dans la d\u00e9fense de sa foi. En voici la conclusion\u00a0:<\/p>\n

La Science Chr\u00e9tienne a beau \u00eatre calomni\u00e9e ou d\u00e9natur\u00e9e par ceux qui ne la comprennent pas, cela ne peut entraver l\u2019activit\u00e9 d\u2019un mouvement si largement inspir\u00e9 par l\u2019esprit d\u2019amour, de bonne volont\u00e9 et d\u2019altruisme, et dont l\u2019objectif tout entier est de b\u00e9nir l\u2019humanit\u00e9 de fa\u00e7on universelle et impartiale. Les scientistes chr\u00e9tiens savent que l\u2019opposition proc\u00e8de uniquement de m\u00e9prises que le temps fera dispara\u00eetre et, dans l\u2019intervalle, rien ne saurait les priver de la paix spirituelle et des occasions de \u00ab\u00a0se r\u00e9jouir dans la V\u00e9rit\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb que la Science Chr\u00e9tienne leur apporte dans la vie.<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Violet Hay et son mari sont retourn\u00e9s \u00e0 Londres vers 1921. Pendant les 48 ann\u00e9es qui ont suivi et jusqu\u2019\u00e0 son d\u00e9c\u00e8s, elle a poursuivi sa t\u00e2che en tant que professeure et praticienne.<\/p>\n

On la conna\u00eet peut-\u00eatre surtout pour sa participation \u00e0 la r\u00e9vision de l\u2019Hymnaire de la Science Chr\u00e9tienne<\/em> en 1932.<\/em> Non seulement a-t-elle \u00e9crit un certain nombre de po\u00e8mes, qui ont ensuite \u00e9t\u00e9 mis en musique pour \u00eatre chant\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9glise, mais elle a \u00e9galement pr\u00e9sid\u00e9 le comit\u00e9 de r\u00e9vision de l\u2019Hymnaire de la Science Chr\u00e9tienne,<\/em> \u00e0 Londres. Ce comit\u00e9 avait pour but de \u00ab\u00a0recevoir et examiner les recommandations des \u00e9glises et des particuliers, dans les Iles britanniques, relatives \u00e0 l\u2019Hymnaire, ainsi que les contributions remarquables \u00e0 l\u2019hymnologie.\u00a0\u00bb Apr\u00e8s que le comit\u00e9 londonien a achev\u00e9 sa t\u00e2che, elle est devenue membre du Comit\u00e9 de r\u00e9vision finale de l\u2019Hymnaire.<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Durant sept d\u00e9cennies, l\u2019objectif de Violet Hay a \u00e9t\u00e9 clair\u00a0: servir l\u2019humanit\u00e9 en servant la cause de la Science Chr\u00e9tienne. Dans un extrait de l\u2019introduction qu\u2019elle a r\u00e9dig\u00e9 pour le conf\u00e9rencier Bicknell Young, en 1913, on trouve cette explication\u00a0:<\/p>\n

A pr\u00e9sent la Science Chr\u00e9tienne ne demande rien au monde\u00a0; elle n\u2019a rien \u00e0 gagner de qui que ce soit, mais elle a tout \u00e0 donner\u00a0; et c\u2019est pour cette raison \u2013 parce que nous qui sommes scientistes chr\u00e9tiens aujourd\u2019hui, nous savons que, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 cet enseignement, nous acqu\u00e9rons peu \u00e0 peu la conscience du royaume des cieux au-dedans de nous, ainsi que, dans une certaine mesure, l\u2019amour, la sant\u00e9 et la paix qui accompagnent cette conscience \u2013 c\u2019est pour cette raison donc que nous ne craignons pas d\u2019aller de l\u2019avant et de tendre la main au monde entier en disant\u00a0: Soyez avec nous, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 nous sommes, dans cette aventure.<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
