Une voix m\u00e9lodieuse fait plus qu\u2019exprimer de belles notes. Elle peut \u00e9lever la pens\u00e9e par de beaux messages inspir\u00e9s, notamment ceux que l\u2019on trouve dans les cantiques.<\/p>\n

Comme de nombreuses \u00e9glises chr\u00e9tiennes, L\u2019Eglise M\u00e8re a eu, durant des ann\u00e9es, un ch\u0153ur qui participait aux services religieux du dimanche en chantant des cantiques et des antiennes. En 1898, l\u2019\u00e9glise \u00e0 Boston a modifi\u00e9 ses services et a inclus des cantiques chant\u00e9s par l\u2019assistance et un solo chant\u00e9 par un ou une soliste. En quelques ann\u00e9es, cette pratique est devenue la norme pour les \u00e9glises filiales de la Science Chr\u00e9tienne.<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> La soprano lyrique Marcella Craft (1874-1959) a \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u2019une des premi\u00e8res \u00e0 chanter dans L\u2019Eglise M\u00e8re.<\/p>\n

Marcia Craft, de son nom de naissance, na\u00eet \u00e0 Indianapolis, dans l\u2019Indiana. Elle emm\u00e9nage avec sa famille \u00e0 Riverside, en Californie, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 13 ans. C\u2019est dans cette ville qu\u2019elle commence sa carri\u00e8re de chanteuse en tant que soliste dans le ch\u0153ur d\u2019une \u00e9glise baptiste, \u00e0 Riverside.<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Remarquant son talent, les gens de sa ville financent ses \u00e9tudes \u00e0 Boston avec Charles R. Adams (1834-1900), un acteur et un t\u00e9nor d\u2019op\u00e9ra accompli, \u00e0 la carri\u00e8re internationale.<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> C\u2019est probablement \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque que Marcia Craft s\u2019int\u00e9resse \u00e0 la Science Chr\u00e9tienne. Elle ne deviendra jamais membre de L\u2019Eglise M\u00e8re, mais elle en sera la soliste de janvier 1898 \u00e0 octobre 1900.<\/p>\n

S\u2019il est difficile de conna\u00eetre les circonstances dans lesquelles elle fait connaissance avec la Science Chr\u00e9tienne, on sait que Marcella Craft \u00e9tait une amie et une patiente de la praticienne de la Science Chr\u00e9tienne Laura E. Sargent<\/a>, qui a fait partie des personnes employ\u00e9es par Mary Baker Eddy pendant de nombreuses ann\u00e9es.<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Ses talents et ses convictions sont consign\u00e9s dans ce m\u00e9morandum de l\u2019Eglise dat\u00e9 du 26 octobre 1898\u00a0:<\/p>\n

Mary Baker Eddy dit que le comte de Dunmore est compositeur de musique et qu\u2019il a ador\u00e9 entendre chanter Mademoiselle Craft. On a dit \u00e0 M\u00e8re que Mademoiselle C. s\u2019int\u00e9resse s\u00e9rieusement \u00e0 la S.C. et qu\u2019elle emporte notre livre d\u2019\u00e9tude avec elle dans ses d\u00e9placements.<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Mary Baker Eddy reconna\u00eet les talents de Marcella Craft. Elle a notamment l\u2019occasion de la f\u00e9liciter \u00e0 un certain moment, au d\u00e9but de l\u2019ann\u00e9e 1900. Cela a lieu apr\u00e8s un concert que Maria Craft a donn\u00e9 \u00e0 Concord, dans le New Hampshire, o\u00f9 Mary Baker Eddy vit \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque\u00a0:<\/p>\n

Hier soir, j\u2019ai re\u00e7u de votre part la plus jolie corbeille de fleurs qu\u2019on m\u2019ait jamais offerte et je tiens \u00e0 vous en remercier.<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Cet automne-l\u00e0, Marcella Craft remet \u00e0 sa \u00ab\u00a0m\u00e8re bien-aim\u00e9e\u00a0\u00bb sa d\u00e9mission en tant que soliste principale de L\u2019Eglise M\u00e8re , afin de se consacrer davantage \u00e0 l\u2019expression du don que Dieu, dit-elle, lui a donn\u00e9\u00a0:<\/p>\n

Pendant des ann\u00e9es, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire depuis que je me suis mise \u00e0 \u00e9tudier la musique s\u00e9rieusement, j\u2019ai esp\u00e9r\u00e9 devenir un jour une grande chanteuse et une personne dont le chant \u00e9l\u00e8verait la pens\u00e9e de ceux qui l\u2019entendraient, ce qu\u2019ils ressentiraient, m\u00eame sans le comprendre… Aujourd\u2019hui on ne peut \u00eatre \u00e9lev\u00e9 au rang des meilleurs chanteurs sans avoir \u00e9tudi\u00e9 en Europe. Jusqu\u2019\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, je n\u2019en ai encore jamais eu la possibilit\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Elle poursuit sa lettre en exprimant sa gratitude \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard de L\u2019Eglise M\u00e8re\u00a0:<\/p>\n

Mais les ann\u00e9es pass\u00e9es \u00e0 travailler la technique n\u2019ont pas \u00e9t\u00e9 vaines, et ces deux derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es et demi durant lesquelles j\u2019ai chant\u00e9 \u00e0 L\u2019Eglise M\u00e8re m\u2019ont \u00e9t\u00e9 de la plus grande aide, au moment m\u00eame o\u00f9 j\u2019en avais le plus besoin, en me pr\u00e9parant pour un travail meilleur et plus vaste. Je ne saurais vous dire combien la Science Chr\u00e9tienne m\u2019a apport\u00e9, ni combien j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 aid\u00e9e \u00e0 aimer en esprit, de fa\u00e7on plus \u00e9clair\u00e9e.<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Elle part vivre \u00e0 Milan, en Italie, o\u00f9 elle \u00e9tudie avec Francesco Mottino et Enzo Guagni. Plus tard, elle sera l\u2019une des trois solistes rempla\u00e7antes de L\u2019Eglise M\u00e8re, entre 1905 et 1915.<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Elle restera en relation avec Mary Baker Eddy apr\u00e8s avoir d\u00e9missionn\u00e9 de son poste de soliste attitr\u00e9e.<\/p>\n

En 1900, elle propose \u00e0 Mary Baker Eddy de chanter pour elle. Celle-ci d\u00e9cline d\u2019abord son offre, lui \u00e9crivant qu\u2019elle a perdu son \u00ab amour pour la musique mat\u00e9rielle \u00bb.<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Marcia Craft r\u00e9pond qu\u2019elle souhaitait seulement chanter pour Mary Baker Eddy si celle-ci avait le \u00ab d\u00e9sir d\u2019entendre la musique de la Pri\u00e8re du soir de M\u00e8re ou du cantique de Communion, et non pour faire \u00e9talage de [son] petit degr\u00e9 de talent \u00bb.<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> (Elle fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence dans cette lettre \u00e0 deux po\u00e8mes de Mary Baker Eddy mis en musique.)<\/p>\n

En fait, Marcia Craft chante une pi\u00e8ce de l\u2019oratorio de Felix Mendelssohn, Elias,<\/em> pour Mary Baker Eddy en 1909, privil\u00e8ge accord\u00e9 \u00e0 un tr\u00e8s petit nombre de personnes. William Rathvon, alors l\u2019un des secr\u00e9taires particuliers de Mary Baker Eddy, se souvient\u00a0:<\/p>\n

A peine [Marcella] a-t-elle \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e que retentit \u00ab Ecoute, Isra\u00ebl \u00bb, avec l\u2019accompagnement d\u2019[Ella] Hoag. La pi\u00e8ce \u00e9tant petite, seuls [Adam H. Dickey] et [Calvin Frye] sont entr\u00e9s, [Irving c. Tomlinson], [Laura Sargent] et moi restant debout dans l\u2019encadrement de la porte. Les autres se sont regroup\u00e9s dans le couloir et sur les marches d\u2019escalier. A la fin d\u2019une note aigu\u00eb soutenue, notre Leader a applaudi. Je revois sa silhouette dress\u00e9e levant les mains bien haut pour applaudir avec vigueur. Par la suite, elle a f\u00e9licit\u00e9 la chanteuse en disant : \u00ab Vous m\u00e9ritez amplement toutes les louanges que vous avez re\u00e7ues. \u00bb [Marcella] a embrass\u00e9 sa main avec une vive \u00e9motion…<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Peu apr\u00e8s ce concert priv\u00e9, Marcella Craft retourne en Europe. Elle va devenir une chanteuse d\u2019op\u00e9ra accomplie et c\u00e9l\u00e8bre en Allemagne.<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Elle se produit \u00e0 l\u2019Op\u00e9ra d\u2019Elberfeld, de Kiel et de Munich \u00e9galement, ville o\u00f9 elle finit par s\u2019installer.<\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Les critiques sont \u00e9logieuses, notamment pour son interpr\u00e9tation de Salom\u00e9, dans l\u2019op\u00e9ra de Richard Strauss Salom\u00e9,<\/em> et de Butterfly, dans l\u2019op\u00e9ra de Giacomo Puccini Madame Butterfly<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Durant toutes ces ann\u00e9es, Marcella Craft reste en relation avec Mary Baker Eddy, lui adressant des lettres que celle-ci est heureuse de recevoir. En 1910, Rathvon \u00e9crit \u00e0 Madame Craft\u00a0:<\/p>\n

Vous serez, j\u2019en suis s\u00fbre, heureuse de savoir combien Mary Baker Eddy s\u2019est r\u00e9jouie quand je lui ai remis votre lettre, cet apr\u00e8s-midi. Elle l\u2019a lue d\u2019un bout \u00e0 l\u2019autre avec une satisfaction \u00e9vidente, et lorsqu\u2019elle me l\u2019a rendue, elle y avait \u00e9crit un commentaire que peu de lettres passant entre ses mains re\u00e7oivent.<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Le d\u00e9clenchement de la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale force Marcella Craft \u00e0 rentrer aux Etats-Unis. Bien qu\u2019elle continue de donner des concerts que la critique encense, elle n\u2019est plus aussi c\u00e9l\u00e8bre qu\u2019en Europe. Finalement, elle retourne en Allemagne.<\/span>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Elle se retire de la sc\u00e8ne dans les ann\u00e9es 30, et retourne dans sa ville natale, \u00e0 Riverside, en Californie. C\u2019est pour elle une retraite active. Elle fonde la Riverside Opera Company et enseigne l\u2019art du chant. Elle meurt \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 85 ans.<\/span>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Le talent de Marcella Craft et son int\u00e9r\u00eat pour la Science Chr\u00e9tienne ont contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 communiquer les messages de la Bible et de Science et Sant\u00e9<\/em> aux personnes assistant aux services de L\u2019Eglise M\u00e8re. Bien que sa passion pour le chant l\u2019ait guid\u00e9e vers d\u2019autres rivages, elle n\u2019a jamais n\u00e9glig\u00e9 sa foi en poursuivant son r\u00eave de chanteuse lyrique.<\/p>\n
