On nous interroge parfois \u00e0 propos de l\u2019authenticit\u00e9 d\u2019un document qui commence par \u00ab\u00a0Une fois par jour, le matin, priez de cette mani\u00e8re\u00a0: Oh Amour Divin, remplis-moi d\u2019amour pour tous…\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

Il s\u2019agit de l\u2019extrait d\u2019une lettre adress\u00e9e \u00e0 \u00ab M. Knapp \u00bb, probablement Ira Oscar Knapp, qui \u00e9tait \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque membre du Conseil des directeurs de la Science Chr\u00e9tienne. Il est sign\u00e9 \u00ab M\u00e8re \u00bb, titre affectueux donn\u00e9 par les \u00e9l\u00e8ves de Mary Baker Eddy \u00e0 leur professeure. Cela sugg\u00e8re qu\u2019elle pourrait en \u00eatre l\u2019auteure. Bien que la lettre originale n\u2019existe plus, nous en avons trouv\u00e9 une copie dans les archives du s\u00e9nateur William E. Chandler \u00e0 la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 historique du New Hampshire [New Hampshire Historical Society] (NHHS).<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Comment la copie d\u2019une lettre de Mary Baker Eddy s\u2019est-elle retrouv\u00e9e dans les archives d\u2019un s\u00e9nateur am\u00e9ricain du New Hampshire ? L\u2019explication est li\u00e9e \u00e0 la participation importante de Chandler dans le \u00ab Proc\u00e8s des Proches \u00bb, en tant qu\u2019avocat. Il intente un proc\u00e8s en mars 1907, au nom du fils de Mary Baker Eddy, George Glover, et d\u2019autres pr\u00e9tendus \u00ab proches \u00bb. Ils pr\u00e9tendent que Mary Baker Eddy est atteinte d\u2019incapacit\u00e9 mentale et que les membres de sa maison et de son \u00e9glise ont la mainmise sur ses finances.<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Selon Peter Wallner, ancien directeur de la biblioth\u00e8que de la NHHS, le New York World<\/em> a engag\u00e9 William Chandler pour s\u2019occuper de l\u2019affaire \u00ab\u00a0en raison de son aversion pour la Science Chr\u00e9tienne et Mary Baker Eddy\u00a0\u00bb. A une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 fleurissent la presse \u00e0 sensation et la recherche du scandale, le World<\/em> voit dans ce proc\u00e8s un moyen de multiplier ses ventes.<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Le proc\u00e8s n\u2019a finalement pas lieu et, en d\u00e9finitive, l\u2019affaire est class\u00e9e sans suite en ao\u00fbt 1907.<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Le fils adoptif de Mary Baker Eddy, Ebenezer J. Foster Eddy, s\u2019est joint \u00e0 l\u2019action en justice peu apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9p\u00f4t de la plainte.<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Avant les audiences d\u2019ao\u00fbt 1907, il remet \u00e0 William Chandler un paquet contenant 20 copies de lettres destin\u00e9es \u00e0 servir de preuves lors du proc\u00e8s. Ce paquet comprend la lettre \u00e9crite \u00e0 Ira Knapp.<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> En comparant les 20 copies aux lettres qui font partie de la collection de la Biblioth\u00e8que, nous avons identifi\u00e9 12 lettres \u00e9crites de la main de Mary Baker Eddy, une lettre \u00e9crite de la main de Laura Sargent et une lettre comportant des corrections de Mary Baker Eddy. Il s\u2019av\u00e8re que Foster Eddy a envoy\u00e9 \u00e0 William Chandler des documents qui, selon lui, pouvaient sans erreur \u00eatre attribu\u00e9s \u00e0 Mary Baker Eddy.<\/p>\n

Mais comment Foster Eddy s\u2019est-il procur\u00e9 une lettre adress\u00e9e \u00e0 Ira Knapp\u00a0? Une explication possible est que, durant une courte p\u00e9riode, entre 1890 et 1891, il a v\u00e9cu avec les Knapp dans leur maison de Roslindale, dans le Massachusetts.<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Bien que nous ne puissions \u00eatre certains de l\u2019authenticit\u00e9 de cette lettre, il est probable que Mary Baker Eddy en soit l\u2019auteure originale et que seule une copie ait surv\u00e9cu.<\/p>\n
