Les anciens gros titres nous offrent un aper\u00e7u de la vie d\u2019alors. Qu\u2019est-ce que les r\u00e9dacteurs ont estim\u00e9 suffisamment important, int\u00e9ressant, stimulant ou porteur d\u2019espoir pour en faire la une du journal\u00a0?<\/p>\n<p>Le vol \u00e0 propulsion humaine \u00e9tait l\u2019un des sujets qui captivaient les journalistes et les lecteurs. Le <em>Monitor<\/em> a largement couvert les d\u00e9buts et le d\u00e9veloppement de l\u2019aviation tout au long du vingti\u00e8me si\u00e8cle. D\u2019anciens articles donnent un aper\u00e7u de l\u2019essor de l\u2019aviation durant les premiers jours du quotidien.<\/p>\n<p>Le 19 d\u00e9cembre 1908, le <em>Monitor<\/em> publie un article intitul\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0U.S. Aeroplanist Breaks Record\u00a0\u00bb [Un a\u00e9roplaniste am\u00e9ricain bat un record]. Il d\u00e9crit les exploits successifs du pionnier de l\u2019aviation, Wilbur Wright (1867-1912)\u00a0:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>LE MANS, France\u00a0: L\u2019a\u00e9roplaniste am\u00e9ricain, Wilbur Wright, a \u00e9tabli un nouveau record du monde pour les machines plus lourdes que l\u2019air, en restant dans les airs pendant 1 h, 53 min, 59 s, lors d\u2019une comp\u00e9tition pour la Coupe Michelin. Son record pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent, de 1 h, 31 min, 51 s, a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9 le 21 septembre&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>M. Alors qu&#8217;il s\u2019\u00e9levait \u00e0 30 m\u00e8tres, une soudaine rafale de vent a balay\u00e9 l\u2019avion de c\u00f4t\u00e9, le faisant plonger violemment en arri\u00e8re. Les spectateurs \u00e9taient terrifi\u00e9s, mais M. Wright a gard\u00e9 son sang-froid et a rapidement redress\u00e9 sa machine&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>L\u2019A\u00e9ro-Club a organis\u00e9 un d\u00eener en l\u2019honneur de M. Wright pour c\u00e9l\u00e9brer sa double victoire. Ces progr\u00e8s ont eu un impact profond sur le journalisme en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral et sur le <em>Monitor<\/em> en particulier. Le <em>Monitor<\/em> a, quant \u00e0 lui, rendu compte de l\u2019actualit\u00e9 a\u00e9ronautique depuis ses d\u00e9buts. D\u2019o\u00f9 la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 d\u2019un r\u00e9dacteur sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9 dans ce domaine, comme Hughes, et, pendant quelque temps, d\u2019une page sp\u00e9ciale d\u00e9di\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019actualit\u00e9 a\u00e9ronautique. Bien que cette rubrique n\u2019ait exist\u00e9 que durant quelques ann\u00e9es \u00e0 la fin des ann\u00e9es 1920, Hughes peut se targuer d\u2019une longue et belle carri\u00e8re dans la couverture de l\u2019actualit\u00e9 a\u00e9ronautique.<\/p>\n<p>Le premier meeting a\u00e9ronautique de Harvard-Boston est l\u2019un des premiers \u00e9v\u00e8nements les plus significatifs couverts par le <em>Monitor.<\/em> Il s\u2019est tenu au d\u00e9but du mois de septembre 1910, \u00e0 Squantum, dans le Massachusetts, au sud de Boston. Pour Hughes, c&#8217;\u00e9tait \u00ab\u00a0le premier et le plus grand meeting a\u00e9ronautique jamais organis\u00e9 dans le nord-est des Etats-Unis\u00a0\u00bb.<span id='easy-footnote-3-67261' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.marybakereddylibrary.org\/fr\/research\/le-monitor-suit-l-essor-des-aeroplanes\/#easy-footnote-bottom-3-67261' title='&lt;i&gt;Ibid.,&lt;\/i&gt; 4.'><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Le meeting s\u2019est d\u00e9roul\u00e9 sur pr\u00e8s de deux semaines et a \u00e9t\u00e9 largement couvert par le <em>Monitor,<\/em> avec notamment des articles quotidiens en premi\u00e8re page, une double page reproduisant une vue \u00e0 vol d\u2019oiseau de la r\u00e9gion de Boston et des comptes rendus sur la participation de pilotes am\u00e9ricains et internationaux de renom \u00e0 cette manifestation. A cette \u00e9poque, la France et l\u2019Angleterre \u00e9taient de s\u00e9rieux concurrents dans la course vers le ciel. Dans son livre <em>Commitment to Freedom<\/em> [Engagement en faveur de la libert\u00e9], paru en 1958, Erwin D. Canham \u00e9crit qu\u2019\u00ab&nbsp;elle demanda \u00e0 plusieurs membres de sa maisonn\u00e9e de se rendre sur la plage de Squantum, pr\u00e8s de Boston, o\u00f9 le vol [de Grahame-White] avait lieu, afin qu\u2019ils lui relatent l\u2019\u00e9v\u00e8nement en d\u00e9tail&nbsp;\u00bb. Calvin Frye, secr\u00e9taire particulier de Mary Baker Eddy et grand admirateur des machines, \u00e9tait l\u2019un d&#8217;entre eux. Dans ses souvenirs publi\u00e9s en 1932, Irving C. Tomlinson \u00e9crit qu\u2019un jour, pendant le meeting, Frye \u00ab&nbsp;rentra pr\u00e9cipitamment dans la maison, changea de veste, sauta dans la voiture et, \u00e0 deux heures de l\u2019apr\u00e8s-midi, partit pour Squantum&#8230; M. Frye rentra \u00e0 la maison \u00e0 cinq heures.
