Miyo Matsukata (1891\u20131984) foi uma das primeiras Cientistas Crist\u00e3s japonesas. Dedicada a introduzir em seu pa\u00eds adotivo uma religi\u00e3o rec\u00e9m encontrada, ela recorreu \u00e0 sua f\u00e9 e \u00e0 sua singular experi\u00eancia multicultural, para desafiar a oposi\u00e7\u00e3o contra religi\u00f5es ocidentais e vencer as dificuldades da Segunda Guerra Mundial.<\/p>\n

Nascidos de pais japoneses, na cidade de Nova York, ela e seu irm\u00e3o mais velho est\u00e3o entre os primeiros nisseis (segunda gera\u00e7\u00e3o de japoneses) na costa leste dos Estados Unidos. A inf\u00e2ncia nos Estados Unidos foi marcada pelos ver\u00f5es que passou com os av\u00f3s no Jap\u00e3o. \u00c0 idade de 21 anos, ela se mudou para l\u00e1 e se casou com Shokuma Matsukata, filho de um importante pol\u00edtico japon\u00eas.<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Assimilar uma nova cultura foi dif\u00edcil para ela, que teve dificuldades para adotar as tradi\u00e7\u00f5es e costumes da vida no Jap\u00e3o, a ponto de sua sa\u00fade ser afetada.<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Em 1917, quando a pr\u00e1tica da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 era limitada principalmente aos ocidentais, Matsukata acompanhou um amigo a uma confer\u00eancia da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3, proferida por Clarence Chadwick, em Yokohama.<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> \u201cQuanta esperan\u00e7a e alegria despertaram em mim\u201d, ela escreveu, \u201cquando percebi que a Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 tinha um Princ\u00edpio divino\u201d.<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Como resultado, ela come\u00e7ou a estudar a Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 por conta pr\u00f3pria. Na mesma \u00e9poca, outras duas mulheres japonesas, Sute Mitsui e Tatsuo Takaki, tamb\u00e9m tomaram conhecimento da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3. As tr\u00eas come\u00e7aram a se dedicar a essa religi\u00e3o, apesar do fato de que ela \u201cdesafiava muitos costumes austeros\u201d e de que sua pr\u00e1tica nesse per\u00edodo \u201cexigia coragem, al\u00e9m de tato, paci\u00eancia, sabedoria e amor\u201d.<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Elas recorreram a Florence E. Boynton, uma professora americana que era Cientista Crist\u00e3, para ajudar no estudo delas e de seus filhos.<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> De acordo com Matsukata, Boynton \u201cfez muito para preparar o solo, para plantar boas sementes e para cuidar do crescimento dessas sementes\u201d.<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Por volta de 1924, Matsukata e seu marido hospedaram Frances Thurber Seal, que estava visitando o Jap\u00e3o e havia antes ajudado a introduzir a Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 na Alemanha. Por meio de Seal, ela tomou conhecimento das escolas para Cientistas Crist\u00e3os nos Estados Unidos (The Principia, no Missouri, e Principia College, em Illinois). Por fim, todos os jovens alunos de Boynton, entre eles os filhos de Matsukata, foram estudar nessas institui\u00e7\u00f5es.<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Aos poucos, a Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 estava crescendo no Jap\u00e3o, ganhando for\u00e7a por meio do empenho de v\u00e1rias fam\u00edlias japonesas que se conheciam. O primeiro grupo informal de Cientistas Crist\u00e3os come\u00e7ou a se reunir em 1924. A Igreja M\u00e3e em Boston (A Primeira Igreja de Cristo, Cientista) os reconheceu em 1931 como Sociedade da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3, Tokyo.<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Fatores culturais e lingu\u00edsticos dificultavam a tradu\u00e7\u00e3o de muitos termos para o japon\u00eas e, na \u00e9poca, as pessoas podiam estudar a Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 apenas em ingl\u00eas. Isso limitou o crescimento da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3, pois em geral a popula\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o falava ingl\u00eas e n\u00e3o tinha muito conhecimento do Cristianismo.<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Matsukata atribuiu \u00e0 sua educa\u00e7\u00e3o na Nova Inglaterra, e a ter sido exposta a ideias protestantes, a capacidade que teve de entender a descoberta e realiza\u00e7\u00f5es de Mary Baker Eddy.<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Todavia, o maior desafio para esse grupo japon\u00eas inicial surgiu durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Antes de os Estados Unidos entrarem na guerra, o Jap\u00e3o come\u00e7ou a limitar influ\u00eancias e atividades relacionadas ao Ocidente. A Sociedade em Tokyo foi dissolvida em 1941, em antecipa\u00e7\u00e3o a uma lei que exigia que todas as denomina\u00e7\u00f5es crist\u00e3s se unissem sob a \u00e9gide da \u201cIgreja Crist\u00e3 do Jap\u00e3o\u201d. Embora os ocidentais, como Florence Boynton, tenham retornado ao pr\u00f3prio pa\u00eds, os cultos da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 continuaram a ser realizados secretamente na casa de Matsukata, at\u00e9 abril de 1942, quando Tokyo foi bombardeada.<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Seguiu-se um per\u00edodo de isolamento, no qual muitos Cientistas Crist\u00e3os japoneses se sentiram separados do mundo e dA Igreja M\u00e3e. Inicialmente Matsukata sentiu esse isolamento. Mais tarde ela escreveu, por\u00e9m, que ao ler o artigo \u201cO existir \u00e9 desdobramento\u201d, de Mary Sands Lee, publicado no Christian Science Journal<\/em> de janeiro de 1941, sua aten\u00e7\u00e3o se firmou na afirma\u00e7\u00e3o de que o \u201cprogresso divino \u00e9 tanto universal, como individual\u201d. Matsukata comentou depois que isso a lembrou de que \u201cnada podia me separar do Amor divino\u201d<\/span>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span> e de que, ao longo da guerra, esse pensamento a ajudou a renovar o sentimento de que n\u00e3o estava isolada. Takashi Oka, que se tornou correspondente do jornal The Christian Science Monitor,<\/em> era aluno da Escola Dominical em Tokyo, quando a guerra come\u00e7ou. Mais tarde, ele recordava Matsukata como uma pessoa que tinha um forte senso de uni\u00e3o com A Igreja M\u00e3e. Ela conseguiu ajudar a superar o sentimento de separa\u00e7\u00e3o dos outros Cientistas Crist\u00e3os japoneses, coletando secretamente literatura da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3, enviada pelo correio, sob prote\u00e7\u00e3o diplom\u00e1tica, por amigos suecos para Widar Bagge, o Ministro da Su\u00e9cia que era vizinho dos Matsukata.<\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Ao t\u00e9rmino da guerra, em 1945, os Cientistas Crist\u00e3os japoneses restabeleceram contato com o exterior. M\u00e3es como Matsukata, cujos filhos tinham permanecido nos Estados Unidos, em Principia College, conseguiram se comunicar com eles pela primeira vez ap\u00f3s quatro anos. Cientistas Crist\u00e3os do Ocidente chegaram ao Jap\u00e3o como membros das for\u00e7as de ocupa\u00e7\u00e3o, capel\u00e3es militares, correspondentes do Monitor<\/em> e trabalhadores volunt\u00e1rios. Novamente, as pessoas no Jap\u00e3o puderam praticar abertamente a Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3, juntamente com novos amigos, com muitas experi\u00eancias para contar.<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Em 1945, a fam\u00edlia Matsukata organizou uma festa de Natal, \u00e0 qual a escritora Emi Abiko se referiu como \u201co primeiro ponto luminoso em meio ao ambiente de desola\u00e7\u00e3o\u201d.<\/span>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Matsukata publicou um testemunho no Journal<\/em> de junho de 1969, destacando os benef\u00edcios da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 para seus filhos. Referindo-se especialmente a momentos de doen\u00e7a, ela escreveu que \u201ccada caso foi curado eficazmente e sempre nos proporcionou uma compreens\u00e3o melhor da cura pelo Cristo\u201d.<\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Ela foi uma das primeiras Cientistas Crist\u00e3s japonesas a anunciar sua pr\u00e1tica da cura no Journal,<\/em> a qual ela exerceu de 1947 at\u00e9 seu falecimento, em 1984.<\/span>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Durante esses anos, ela viu sua religi\u00e3o crescer no Jap\u00e3o muito al\u00e9m do modesto come\u00e7o. Isso incluiu a publica\u00e7\u00e3o da primeira edi\u00e7\u00e3o em japon\u00eas da revista O Arauto da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3<\/em> em 1962, assim como a tradu\u00e7\u00e3o de 1976 do livro Ci\u00eancia e Sa\u00fade com a Chave das Escrituras,<\/em> de Mary Baker Eddy \u2014 importante especialmente por ter permitido aos estudantes da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3, cujo idioma \u00e9 o japon\u00eas, estudar pela primeira vez o livro-texto em sua l\u00edngua materna.<\/p>\n

Matsukata e outros colegas obreiros estabeleceram a base para essas publica\u00e7\u00f5es e outras realiza\u00e7\u00f5es. Nas palavras de Emi Abiko, eles deixaram um \u201cprecioso legado para gera\u00e7\u00f5es futuras\u201d.<\/span>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
