Mary Baker Eddy normalmente dava orienta\u00e7\u00e3o a seus alunos, quando eles come\u00e7avam sua pr\u00f3pria pr\u00e1tica da cura. Ela fazia isso de muitas maneiras \u2014 por meio de cartas, conversas, reuni\u00f5es da Associa\u00e7\u00e3o da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 e de seus escritos publicados. Um de seus alunos, George B. Wickersham, escreveu \u00e0 sua professora, em mar\u00e7o de 1885, sobre sua pr\u00e1tica da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 e seu desejo de talvez deixar Chicago. A Sra. Eddy respondeu:<\/p>\n

Minha querida Professora:<\/p>\n

N\u00e3o foi neglig\u00eancia minha eu n\u00e3o ter escrito antes, mas tenho praticado e desfrutado os resultados da pr\u00e1tica da grandiosa<\/span> Ci\u00eancia<\/span><\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> que a Senhora descobriu.<\/p>\n

\u00c9 verdade que eu e outras pessoas tivemos nossos momentos de des\u00e2nimo, mas saber em meu cora\u00e7\u00e3o que a Ci\u00eancia \u00e9 tudo o que a Senhora afirmou sobre ela, e por estar totalmente convencido de sua veracidade, eu continuei a pratic\u00e1-la e hoje estou pronto para dar testemunho a favor dela.<\/p>\n

Eu tenho not\u00edcias da Senhora por meio da \u201cAssocia\u00e7\u00e3o\u201d<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> e por seus alunos, mas o bem maior que recebi foram as palavras que a Senhora disse ao meu amigo, Sr. Wamsley**, a quem a Senhora t\u00e3o gentilmente recebeu em casa em Boston, e cuja filha eu estou tratando \u2014 a filha que esteve enferma por muitos anos. Suas palavras cheias de alegria e \u00e2nimo me deram muita esperan\u00e7a e me sinto grato por elas. E ficarei muito feliz, querida Professora, toda vez em que a Senhora me enviar uma palavra de \u00e2nimo e encorajamento.<\/p>\n

Estou pensando em me mudar de Chicago, pois sinto que talvez minha situa\u00e7\u00e3o financeira possa melhorar, j\u00e1 que minhas despesas no ano passado foram bem pesadas. Sentirei falta da \u201cAssocia\u00e7\u00e3o\u201d e da assist\u00eancia que os membros d\u00e3o uns aos outros, mas as circunst\u00e2ncias parecem exigir que me mude. Gostei muito de ler a \u00faltima edi\u00e7\u00e3o do Journal<\/em> \u2014 e agrade\u00e7o \u00e0 sua pessoa<\/u> por seu artigo em resposta \u00e0 \u2014 ou melhor, em<\/u> \u201cdefesa da \u2018Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3\u2019\u201d***.<\/p>\n

George B. Wickersham (1850\u20131915) nasceu em West Liberty, no estado de Ohio, e faleceu em Denver, no Colorado. Como aluno de Mary Baker Eddy, ele completou o Curso Prim\u00e1rio (1884), o Curso Normal (1886) e o Curso de Obstetr\u00edcia (1887). Ele passou a fazer parte da Associa\u00e7\u00e3o de Cientistas Crist\u00e3os em 1886 e se filiou \u00e0 Igreja de Cristo (Cientista) nesse mesmo ano. Em abril de 1893, se filiou \u00c0 Primeira Igreja de Cristo, Cientista. Em 1887, ele obteve o registro da Academia da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 de Denver, onde ensinou e praticou. Mais tarde, ele se tornou praticista e professor da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 com an\u00fancio na Lista de Endere\u00e7os do The Christian Science Journal <\/em>e desempenhou essas fun\u00e7\u00f5es at\u00e9 seu falecimento.<\/p>\n

James Walmsley (1835\u20131904) nasceu em Manchester, Inglaterra, e faleceu em Chicago, Illinois. O texto \u201cDefence of Christian Science\u201d foi publicado como artigo na edi\u00e7\u00e3o de mar\u00e7o de 1885 do The Christian Science Journal <\/em>(p\u00e1ginas 1\u20134) e tamb\u00e9m em formato de panfleto, nesse mesmo m\u00eas. (Ver documento 334A.45.026 para ler o recibo de sua impress\u00e3o.) Essa foi uma resposta a diversos ataques procedentes de cl\u00e9rigos que afirmavam que a Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 n\u00e3o era crist\u00e3, especificamente uma carta do Reverendo A. J. Gordon lida pelo Reverendo Joseph Cook, em uma palestra proferida em 23 de fevereiro de 1885, no Templo Tremont, em Boston. A10373 \u00e9 um rascunho de \u201cDefence of Christian Science\u201d. Al\u00e9m de publicar o panfleto, a Sra. Eddy defendeu suas ideias de maneira mais concisa, em pessoa, em uma das palestras que Cook ministrou no Templo Tremont, em 16 de mar\u00e7o de 1885. Aparentemente, o que a Sra. Eddy disse na ocasi\u00e3o foi anotado por um taqu\u00edgrafo, e uma vers\u00e3o foi publicada na edi\u00e7\u00e3o de abril de 1885 do Journal<\/em>, sob o t\u00edtulo \u201cA Strong Reply\u201d [Uma forte defesa], como tamb\u00e9m nas p\u00e1ginas 95\u201398 de Miscellaneous Writings<\/em> [Escritos diversos], sob o t\u00edtulo \u201cChristian Science in Tremont Temple\u201d [A Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 no Templo Tremont].
