A assinatura de Lulu Knight aparece junto com as de alguns outros membros do Curso Normal de 1943 no Conselho do Ensino, na folha de rosto do exemplar de seu professor, John M. Tutt, do livro Ci\u00eancia e Sa\u00fade com a Chave das Escrituras,<\/em> de Mary Baker Eddy. Assinaturas de outros alunos est\u00e3o nas p\u00e1ginas seguintes (n\u00e3o ilustradas).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lulu M. Knight (c. 1885\u20131968) foi a primeira pessoa negra a atuar como professora da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3.<\/p>\n

Chamava-se Lula M. Johnson, filha de Jackson e Laura Johnson, e cresceu em Nebraska. Quando tinha cerca de 20 anos, j\u00e1 havia se casado, frequentado a faculdade por tr\u00eas anos e estava morando em Chicago.<\/p>\n

Tamb\u00e9m j\u00e1 havia conhecido a Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3. Ao filiar-se nA Igreja M\u00e3e, em 1912, informou que sua afilia\u00e7\u00e3o religiosa anterior era Metodista, em seu formul\u00e1rio de pedido de filia\u00e7\u00e3o, o qual foi assinado por sua professora da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3, Ella Peck Sweet, CSD, de Denver, Colorado, EUA. Sweet fora aluna de Mary Baker Eddy e havia trabalhado por um curto per\u00edodo em sua casa em Pleasant View, em Concord, New Hampshire, EUA.<\/p>\n

Depois que Johnson ficou vi\u00fava, ela trabalhou como subscritora de seguros e tinha sua pr\u00f3pria casa, que dividiu por um tempo com o irm\u00e3o mais velho, William N. Johnson \u2014 veterano da Primeira Guerra Mundial e advogado. Casou novamente em 1931 com Arthur B. Knight, que mais tarde fundou sua pr\u00f3pria companhia de seguros e imobili\u00e1ria. A Sra. Knight tinha an\u00fancio como praticista no The Christian Science Journal<\/em> desde o ano anterior. (Posteriormente, ela fez uma corre\u00e7\u00e3o no an\u00fancio, mudando o primeiro nome de Lula para Lulu.)<\/p>\n

Durante treze anos, Knight conduziu a pr\u00e1tica da cura crist\u00e3 de sua casa na zona sul de Chicago. Em 1943, tornou-se membro do Curso Normal no Conselho do Ensino da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3, ministrado por John M. Tutt, e recebeu o t\u00edtulo de CSB, permitindo-lhe ministrar anualmente o Curso Prim\u00e1rio da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3. Ela, ent\u00e3o, abriu seu consult\u00f3rio no Kimball Building, situado no Loop na regi\u00e3o central de Chicago. Knight era membro da Oitava Igreja de Cristo, Cientista, Chicago.<\/p>\n

Em 1950, a edi\u00e7\u00e3o comemorativa de 5 anos da revista Ebony<\/em> publicou um perfil da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 entre os negros. Observou que \u201ca f\u00e9 tem uma professora negra, a Sra. Lula B. [sic] Knight, esposa de um corretor de im\u00f3veis de Chicago, e reconhecida professora das doutrinas da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 desde 1943\u201d.<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Knight testemunhou mudan\u00e7as na sociedade dos Estados Unidos, bem como na Igreja de Cristo, Cientista. Sua filia\u00e7\u00e3o nA Igreja M\u00e3e em 1912 recebeu anota\u00e7\u00e3o \u201c(Negra)\u201d. Seu an\u00fancio no Journal<\/em> recebeu a designa\u00e7\u00e3o \u201c(de cor)\u201d at\u00e9 1956, quando essa indica\u00e7\u00e3o foi retirada dos praticistas negros. A Ebony<\/em> relatou uma situa\u00e7\u00e3o complexa no movimento da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 em 1950:<\/p>\n

A atitude da igreja em rela\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 quest\u00e3o racial \u00e9 idealisticamente justa, mas nem sua diretoria (o corpo governante) nem seu manual definem qualquer pol\u00edtica geral com rela\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 quest\u00e3o de cor. A igualdade \u00e9 um ideal em dire\u00e7\u00e3o ao qual se busca chegar \u201co mais humanamente r\u00e1pido poss\u00edvel\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

No sul dos Estados Unidos, a igreja obedece a padr\u00f5es existentes e leis estaduais que impedem que pessoas de diferentes ra\u00e7as se misturem, mas em Washington, DC, negros e brancos frequentam as mesmas igrejas. Em Birmingham, Alabama, membros negros e brancos da igreja costumavam se congregar juntos, mas passam a realizar reuni\u00f5es separadas, devido \u00e0 agita\u00e7\u00e3o intensificada em prol da segrega\u00e7\u00e3o racial, promovida por autoridades municipais. Os dois grupos gostariam de se congregar, mas a \u201clei\u201d os for\u00e7a a observar as leis de Jim Crow. Em Boston, nenhum registro de hist\u00f3rico racial \u00e9 mantido na lista oficial mundial de membros dA Igreja M\u00e3e.<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Knight estava no palco participando do programa da Assembleia Anual dA Igreja M\u00e3e de 1961. Ela leu epis\u00f3dios de cura pela Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 enviados do mundo todo, para os 7.000 participantes. Os relatos que ela compartilhou inclu\u00edam curas de \u201cperturba\u00e7\u00f5es card\u00edacas, trismos, papeira, asma, tuberculose, tumor e ossos fraturados\u201d.<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Lulu M. Knight fez uma contribui\u00e7\u00e3o significativa para a cura pela Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 em Chicago e em outras partes dos Estados Unidos, principalmente entre os negros no meio-oeste, Oklahoma e sul da Calif\u00f3rnia, onde muitos de seus alunos residiam. Em uma carta de 1967 \u00e0 Diretoria da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3, ela escreveu: \u201cDepois de passar quase quarenta anos curando e ensinando pela Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3, de forma alguma encaro minhas obriga\u00e7\u00f5es com a Causa da Ci\u00eancia Crist\u00e3 levianamente. Eu entendo suas exig\u00eancias e tenho me esfor\u00e7ado para cumpri-las\u201d.<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
