\n\n\n\u00c0s vezes nos perguntam se Mary Baker Eddy era vegetariana ou se fez alguma declara\u00e7\u00e3o sobre uma dieta \u00e0 base de plantas.<\/p>\n

A Sra. Eddy n\u00e3o era vegetariana e nossos registros mostram que ela comeu carne durante grande parte de sua vida.<\/p>\n

Por exemplo, Hermann S. Hering, que foi Primeiro Leitor dA Igreja M\u00e3e, al\u00e9m de ter atuado em v\u00e1rias outras fun\u00e7\u00f5es, fez as seguintes observa\u00e7\u00f5es em 1897, durante uma visita \u00e0 casa da Sra. Eddy, Pleasant View, em Concord, New Hampshire, EUA:<\/p>\n

Por ocasi\u00e3o da visita a Pleasant View, em julho (4\u20135) de 1897, surgiu, no trem, uma pergunta sobre comer carne, e algu\u00e9m afirmou que a Sra. Eddy certamente era vegetariana \u2014 ela n\u00e3o mataria nada para comer\u2026 Era um dia muito quente, um dos mais quentes de que as pessoas se lembravam ter passado em Concord. Disseram-nos que havia \u00e1gua fresca no por\u00e3o\u2026 Olhamos bem aquele por\u00e3o limpo e arrumado que tinha uma fornalha para aquecimento em uma extremidade \u2014 tudo limpo e caiado. Nas vigas, bem alto, havia pendurados diversos dos melhores presuntos e toucinhos j\u00e1 vistos. Isso mostra que a Sra. Eddy n\u00e3o era vegetariana. Eu disse a um dos funcion\u00e1rios que eu conhecia: \u201cQuando tiver a oportunidade, pergunte \u00e0 Sra. Eddy sobre a quest\u00e3o de evitar comer carne para se tornar mais espiritual\u201d. O ponto era n\u00e3o comer carne visando \u00e0 pr\u00f3pria purifica\u00e7\u00e3o. Mais tarde eu tive a resposta. A Sra. Eddy deu a ele esta declara\u00e7\u00e3o, e ele a repassou para mim: \u201cSe voc\u00ea evitar comer carne para se tornar mais espiritual, voc\u00ea est\u00e1 se sujeitando \u00e0 lei da teosofia; o que \u00e9 muito pior do que qualquer coisa em que voc\u00ea poder\u00e1 incorrer comendo carne”. Ela tamb\u00e9m disse que, se pararmos de comer carne, podemos fazer nosso corpo passar por um estresse desnecess\u00e1rio<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

No entanto, tamb\u00e9m \u00e9 verdade que a Sra. Eddy passara a comer carne com menos frequ\u00eancia em seus \u00faltimos anos. A bi\u00f3grafa Gillian Gill escreveu sobre isso, em seu livro de 1998, Mary Baker Eddy<\/i>:<\/em><\/p>\n

Com o passar dos anos, embora nunca tenha se declarado vegetariana, a Sra. Eddy passou a comer cada vez menos carne, apenas um pouco de f\u00edgado ou frango de vez em quando, talvez iscas de peixe no jantar ou algo leve em uma torrada. Bacon \u2014 ou carne de porco salgada, como ela a chamava \u2014 era sua carne favorita…<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Embora ela n\u00e3o tenha feito nenhuma declara\u00e7\u00e3o direta sobre vegetarianismo, tamb\u00e9m localizamos esta observa\u00e7\u00e3o que a Sra. Eddy fez, encontrada em um serm\u00e3o sem data em nossas cole\u00e7\u00f5es: \u201cO que s\u00e3o prazeres gustativos: lentamente mastigar e engolir peru assado ou consumir vorazmente um cordeiro que lambeu a m\u00e3o que se ergueu para derramar seu sangue?\u201d<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

As numerosas declara\u00e7\u00f5es da Sra. Eddy sobre dieta se referiam principalmente \u00e0 ado\u00e7\u00e3o de uma abordagem espiritual do assunto. Por exemplo, em Ci\u00eancia e Sa\u00fade com a Chave das Escrituras,<\/em> ela escreveu: \u201cA individualidade criada por Deus n\u00e3o \u00e9 carn\u00edvora, como atesta a \u00e9poca do mil\u00eanio descrita por Isa\u00edas\u2026\u201d E ent\u00e3o citou Isa\u00edas 11, vers\u00edculo 6:<\/p>\n

O lobo habitar\u00e1 com o cordeiro,
E o leopardo se deitar\u00e1 junto ao cabrito;
O bezerro, o le\u00e3o novo e o animal cevado andar\u00e3o juntos;
E um pequenino os guiar\u00e1.<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

O livro tamb\u00e9m diz: \u201cSe admites a hip\u00f3tese generalizada de que a comida seja o sustento da vida, segue-se a necessidade de outra admiss\u00e3o em dire\u00e7\u00e3o oposta \u2014 a de que a comida tenha poder para destruir a Vida, Deus, pela insufici\u00eancia ou pelo excesso, pela qualidade ou pela quantidade”.<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> E cont\u00e9m o relato de uma pessoa que sofria de \u201cdispepsia\u201d (indigest\u00e3o), e que obteve a cura por meio da ora\u00e7\u00e3o, com o seguinte resultado: \u201cEle aprendeu que um disp\u00e9ptico estava muito longe de ser a imagem e semelhan\u00e7a de Deus \u2014 longe de ter ‘dom\u00ednio sobre os peixes do mar, sobre as aves dos c\u00e9us, [e] sobre os animais dom\u00e9sticos’, se o comer um peda\u00e7o de carne tinha poder para afet\u00e1-lo\u201d.<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n
