The Hymnal Supplement (1932)
In the Supplement to the 1932 edition of the Christian Science Hymnal, six hymns appeared as variations of those found in the volume’s main body. Changes included slight melodic or rhythmic alterations, as well as the use of different keys, meters, or harmonic settings:
- Hymn 10 (EIN’ FESTE BURG) and Hymn 411 (EIN’ FESTE BURG)
- Hymn 72 (BENEVENTO) and Hymn 405 (BENEVENTO)
- Hymn 126 (BALLERMA) and Hymn 403 (BALLERMA)
- Hymn 320 (AZMON) and Hymn 409 (AZMON NEW)
- Hymn 346 (MOSCOW) and Hymn 401 (ITALIAN HYMN)
- Hymn 357 (EVAN) and Hymn 407 (EVAN NEW)
Nineteen texts in the main body were set to completely different tunes in the Supplement. The reason seems to have involved a need for simpler tunes that would be more accessible for smaller congregations:
- Hymn 20 (PIXHAM) and Hymn 416 (LINWOOD)
- Hymn 66 (SINE NOMINE) and Hymn 421 (SARUM)
- Hymn 69 (SONG) and Hymn 423 (PENITENTIA)
- Hymn 91 (BIRLING) and Hymn 422 (ALSACE)
- Hymn 124 (CAMBERWELL) and Hymn 402 (DENNIS)
- Hymn 133 (ABENDS) and Hymn 424 (COMFORT)
- Hymn 139 (SURREY) and Hymn 427 (REST)
- Hymn 149 (ST. BARNABAS) and Hymn 426 (JEHOVAH)
- Hymn 164 (NATIVITY), Hymn 165 (PLENITUDE), and Hymn 417 (ANTIOCH)
- Hymn 171 (ALLELUIA) and Hymn 413 (EASTER)
- Hymn 194 (CONTEMPLATION) and Hymn 410 (DALEHURST)
- Hymn 201 (ST. GEORGE) and Hymn 404 (OLMUTZ)
- Hymn 202 (ANCIENT OF DAYS) and Hymn 412 (LONDONDERRY)
- Hymn 206 (NEWCASTLE) and Hymn 428 (HAMMERSMITH)
- Hymn 232 (HAMSTEAD) and Hymn 406 (ST. MARGARET)
- Hymn 233 (DAS WALT’ GOTT) and Hymn 419 (HOLLEY)
- Hymn 287 (NUN DANKET ALL) and Hymn 408 (GERONTIUS)
- Hymn 311 (O JESU) and Hymn 420 (COMPASSION)
- Hymn 343 (STRACATHRO), Hymn 344 (ST. ANDRÉ), and Hymn 429 (BOSTON)
Four Gospel tunes were added to the Supplement. All were completely new to the Hymnal:
- Hymn 414 (I LOVE TO TELL THE STORY)
- Hymn 415 (PILGRIM)
- Hymn 418 (ETERNITY)
- Hymn 425 (JOY COMETH IN THE MORNING)
