From the Papers: Sermon at Chickering Hall

April 18, 2019

On October 25, 1885, Mary Baker Eddy preached for the first time at Boston’s Chickering Hall. Her text was a verse from the book of John: “Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No” (21:5).

Interestingly, that service also marked the start of the Christian Science Sunday School. Classes were open to both adults and children, and the following students of Eddy served as teachers: Calvin Frye, E. A. Bailey, H. P. Bailey, Augusta Stetson, Sarah Crosse, and Josephine Woodbury. A total of 70 pupils were present on that first Sunday.
